The Learning Communities' project was initiatied in June 2009. The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Commonwealth Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) entered into an agreement for the research and development of a national network of Learning Communities over a four year period.
The initial network emanated from the work of Dr Chris Sarra and the Stronger Smarter Institute (SSI) and evolved into a multi-level network linking education departments, Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies and schools.
All Learning Community Schools need to demonstrate a commitment to a high-expectation, high-performance and relational approach to Indigenous education, that works in close partnership with local Indigenous leaders.
The project team supports the schools to have a community centred approach to co-create ongoing professional development and curriculum resources for the school and community
